Signature: Dasi. Hi again Dasi, We got a bit sidetracked on this identification because in searching Lady Beetles from Hawaii, we found this Insects of Hawaii photo gallery and we spotted the Black Stink Bug you submitted earlier that we misidentified as a possible Leaf Beetle.
The gallery also shows a Lady Beetle that looks somewhat like this individual and it is identified as Curinus coeruleus. Correction: March 24, Thanks to Luc from the University of Hawaii Insect Museum for informing us that this is Halmus chalybeus, though the photo on BugGuide lacks the orange markings and attributes those markings to our original identification of Curinus coeruleus.
Perhaps BugGuide is wrong as well. Completely wrong with the id. Close, but no cigar. Please let me know if you have any further IDs before just spuriously IDing wrong species. Thank you for the correction on this Luc. We have no entomologists on our staff. Our mission is to relay an appreciation of the lower beasts to readers who are not members of the scientific community.
We try to the best of our ability to identify the diverse and divergent creatures that come to us from all parts of the world. No doubt we have countless misidentified or unidentified creatures on our site, but the beauty of the internet is that we do not have to wait for a new edition to come out in print to make corrections.
Expert input like yours can result in instant gratification for corrections. Alas, it may take us some time to track down Dasi who submitted the original photo. Thanks Cesar. We feel the same way, and though we have written back to Luc the University of Hawaii INsect Museum, he has ignored our request for additional information. This PDF says that C. Treat trees by wrapping sticky barriers around the trunk such as Tanglefoot , remembering to check and replace them regularly.
Boric acid bait stations placed near ant nests and on trails can also help. Finally, put away most of your pesticides and reduce your reliance on them. The home garden is a great place to use products with low toxicity to people and animals, products that biodegrade quickly. Horticultural oils, insecticidal soaps, microbial and botanical insecticides meet this need and can be used successfully in the home garden. Look for them in your garden store.
Avoid using broad spectrum insecticides such as organophosphates eg. Malathion , carbamates eg. Sevin , and pyrethroids eg. Major outbreaks of aphids and scales in the garden are often the result of having used broad spectrum pesticides which kill natural enemies. Why isn't praying mantis on our list of beneficial insects?
Members of the mantis family are formidable ambush predators but are not very discriminatory about what they eat. Because they will consume large quantities of beneficial insects as well as pests, they were not included on the list. Will these practices help honey bees? You won't have to worry about them succumbing to other predatory garden pests.
The bright color warns others that they look like an unsatisfying meal. They can release a bad smelling and orange-tasting chemical when stressed, which other predators find downright revolting. Ladybugs have also been known to play dead and even bite! But don't worry because humans can't feel their tiny mandibles at all.
