If I read you right, you are saying that it is more likely to add heavier strings to the bass end if one is inclined to extend the range of a guitar like instrument by adding additional strings. I suppose there is a limit to how far you can go in the thin direction and still have a string that will have enough mass to vibrate the soundboard of an acoustic instrument.
