Lake Nokomis is one of the best ones to visit as it is right in the middle of the Twin Cities and has a great beach. When the city of Minneapolis bought the land in , the lake at that time only averaged 5 feet deep. Seven years later they started digging it out deeper and by it had a bathhouse and beach making it the most popular swimming spot in the Twin Cities. Unfortunately, a really cool island right in the middle of the lake was eliminated while deepening the water, but today it is still a great place to swim, sun, and jog.

There are viewing areas on both sides of the gorge and at the bottom of the gorge. There are warning signs and small fences to deter you from getting closer to the falls, but it is obvious that many people do. From the look of it you could get behind the falls. This was the only significant waterfall on the Mississippi and was once a major tourist attraction.
However due to erosion, both natural and man-made, the falls started to collapse in They were artificially restored and protected but they lost all their natural beauty and now look man made. Hidden Falls is a small waterfall that can be visited on the other side of the Mississippi. There is also a Shadow Falls, but I have not been able to find any pictures of it nor get a chance to try and visit it.
Other attractions at Minnehaha include the John H. Descend into the gorge below the falls via a staircase to get a great view of the falls from below. Park benches in the upper reaches of the gorge provide a cool and shady spot to watch the falls on hot summer days.
For the more adventurous, take the trail down the gorge past lovely pools and photogenic stone bridges to a sandy beach at the confluence of Minnehaha Creek and the Mississippi River. This beach is a favorite of both the sun-loving and anglers that pursue their quarry in the Mississippi River. Picnicking is also a favorite past-time in the area above the gorge with numerous tables, grills, and pavilions available for renting for gatherings.
