When do church bells ring

I have rung at many towers and this tends to be the pattern for ringing, I dont think anyone would regard average ringing time per week as excessive. When viewing the property I had no idea and was not told about the church bells. I am a shift worker in the emergency services and dispies Saturday night shifts as when I return home around 7am on the Sunday morning desperate for sleep I am awoken an hour and a bit later by around 45 mins of constant bell ringing.

I have never known ringing to go on for so long in any other town especially on a Sunday morning. This is a a wonderful tradition that should be encouraged, not restricted. Some towers have baffled their louvres to soften the output and I would have no issues with this approach but the degree of anti-social ranting in this post shows no respect for the existing community and traditions and deserves to be ignored.

Could you ask the Vicar or the tower captain if there is away to dampen the sound? I'm sure I've heard of rubber 'shoes' placed over the clappers for practicing then removed for weddings and the like. The amount of ringing would not constitute noise pollution and anyway is subject to canon law. It is not outdated as it has never stopped and still has total relevance.

Phil Wright, you are wrong on every point. It is the responsibility of local councils to enforce noise pollution laws. Bell ringing ticks every box that would make it a statutory noise nuisance repeated regularly and without any other purpose other than to make noise, for example. The same comments would undoubtedly be made for any noise pollution that disrupts a persons quiet enjoyment of their own home.

The only difference would be that the council would take action. Ringing only has any meaning to the tiny minority of people who believe in the invisible man in the sky and absolutely none to the vast majority of people who don't. Because it has been going on for hundreds of years is a stupid argument.

For 4 hundred years the church bunt people alive if they failed the inquisition. Laws change and society improves. Michael Marlowe, 1 read what I said properly about councils. Phil Wright, To say that bell ringing is separate from the church is frankly absurd. I assume the laws to refer to are the new planning laws. I have no idea what you are talking about when you say bell ringing is a legally accepted part of this country.

I assume you are just making that up. The facts are that the church is still today a powerful institution, It reaches into our government and is given 26 seats in the house of Lords.

Councils do not enforce laws that may upset its political masters. Its corruption pure and simple and we all have to suffer because of it. Well said Michael. The Church has extraordinary privilege in this country despite declining attendance and record levels of free-thinking amongst the UK public. Hello all people. I just moved to an accomodation for uni in Swansea and it's on opposite side of the road of You guessed it..

The frikkin bells are ringing every 15 minutes It's been a hell of a night.. I just moved in as well If you don't know what that means then it's until 9am There should be a noise limit imposed on unsociable hours Haha mate, the fifteen minute ones are just the beginning, you'll be drowning those out in no time,. I always like to imagine the vicar has gotten drunk and is just tugging on the ropes willy nilly. I live directly across from a church that rings their bells from 9am to 12pm every sunday.

I had no idea this would happen when we moved in 7 months ago, but it wakes me up and drives me insane. They also ring them for 15 minutes at noon every day of the week, and through their evening Wednesday service. I'm a Christian but I am outraged that they think it's okay to do this in the middle of a neighborhood!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure my boy Michael would dance and sing to them if they had a tune, instead of ringing an incessant dirge,. I doubt that they will stop ringing bells across England anytime soon i dont see this as a priority for any council your better of trying to get a signiture petition started online and share through social media its more likely to get conversation started and more attention if you feel strongly about this.

I hope you find a solution, but please remember, it's a blessing to have a home and it's a blessing to be able to hear even if that is loud annoying bells I'm sure you will realise this one day. Be kind and compassionate, you'll be surprised at how good life can get when you start to be grateful for everything you have.

I promise you if you change you mind set with positive thoughts when the bells ring, you'll be much happier! Good luck. I'm Clare from Chicago. I came upon this thread accidentally, looking for information re a rumor I'd heard that perhaps the church bells would be ringing tomorrow Sunday morning I was hoping to hear bells in the AM It made me a bit sad to hear the conflict over bells in this feed.

As a girl, I lived within 2 blocks of 3 different churches, and the bells were a joy for me. These days I hear them less often, although as it happens I'm an active part of an Episcopal church community here in Chicago Note: Neither simple-minded, nor a bigot, nor looking for a feel good solution btw At any rate, having read this thread earlier, sharing some of it with a friend who had come over to help with my husband's care, it has dawned on me that when you are all "sheltering in place" at some point in the not too distant future, you'll likely not be hearing those bells much.

People won't be congregating for any reason, including bell ringing. Perhaps for some of you, that will be a boon. But I'd imagine that for many in the community the silence will be a poignant reminder of the losses you are experiencing. I send my prayers, meditations, good thoughts to any who read this. Be well. I have found the lack of bell ringing practice to be a blessing during these unprecedented times.

Glad to hear the bell ringing is temporarily halted. You who's complaining about the bells ringing because you're renting a place why don't you push off somewhere else.

Pretty funny how this one guy triggered a discussions that would turn out to last more than 10 years. I fucking hate these church bells by the way and I fucking want to kill myself every time they wake me up on a nice sunday morning! The church down the street from my house does the same thing, only difference they do it everyday!!!!

Do the same if it bothers you!! I am a driver and I need my sleep! Wouldn't have a problem with the soothing enchanting sounds of the call to prayer, there's something powerful and almost spiritual in it. Better than a din of bells clanging tunelessly. I am a bell ringer, I do not believe in God, I am not religious, I ring the bells because I am helping to keep alive a year old tradition, and yes, to ring them so they sound good takes years of practice.

The bottom line is, if you move in next to a church, chances are you are going to have to hear the bells being rung!! If you move in next to a church and then try to get the bells silenced so you can have a lie in, you are incredibly selfish and arrogant. I live near the police station in West Didsbury, I have sirens going past at all hours of the day or night, think yourself lucky it's just one a week at a specified time And if you want a lie in past 9 on a Sunday invest in some ear plugs!

Its been fixed all church's agreed to no longer ring bells with exception to weddings and other special occasions despite it being a year old tradition they've decided that Karens sleep is more important. There's allot of complaining but little suggestion.

So your solutions would be? Obviously this post was made about one church but im assuming people agreeing the bells should stop then it would be a nation wide issue to be raised. If you truly wanted to 'fix' this I would assume it would have to be discussed in government for a nation wide ban on ringing bells not just one council?

In order for something so trivial to be discussed in government you would need to receive enough signatures. You create a petition on the GOV website and to get most attention you would need to post throughout social media stating you want to "ban the bells" assuming thousands of people in the nation agree and sign your petition then it would be discussed in parliament.

If you truly believe you can successfully achieve that then go for it but i highly doubt by complaining on this website on a post of 10 years plus will make any changes!

How would you suggest it gets fixed then? Do you really think during a pandemic the council is going to look at this thread and say "you know what this is an important thing to discuss right now".

I love this talk of it being tradition as though that makes a difference to anything. Slavery was a tradition for centuries as well, doesn't make it right. I think comparing a bell ring to slavery is ridiculous but your right it could change but I think it would take allot more attention nationly to actually make a change. If you ring bells and don't believe in God then you just suck, you basically said i have no real reason to do this other than fuck you I like bells.

The church sucks traditions are stupid and people deserve their right to quite. When neighbors are to loud and people complain it gets shut down why do they deserve special treatment, because they've been annoying for years. Also the argument that you should just get used to something you don't like is stupid. We innovate and change things we don't like to better suit us that's what humans do we innovate we change, getting stuck in tradition is how you halt progress.

Fuck bells people have the right to quite, they do nothing but loudly announce a thing that everyone already knows about. We get it church is happening but I really don't give a fuck about your religious practices. Keep it to yourselves and shut the fuck up.

A lot of comments saying things like 'the general public enjoy bell ringing, it shouldn't stop for a few selfish individuals' or similar. Or at least changed to less anti-social times. I don't see how people in the local people are called selfish when there are some churches that ring their bells every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day. If that isn't selfish, I don't know what is.

Yes we are entitled to quite! I actually have wrote to Heathrow airport several times now about the noise of aeroplanes over my house the sound is far to loud and a nuisance.

I understand I choose to live next to an airport but I deserve quite the noise has to stop! I can not believe the sheer arrogance and entitlement of some religious people here. Disgusting, egotistical, megalomaniac cretins who dare to call other people 'selfish' because they want to be able to have a proper sleep once a week. The fact that you don't want to compromise on any level have them rung later, quieter etc. You honestly deserve all you get, no wonder they burned down the Notre Dame, serves you right.

We should stop giving these lunatics a pass for noise pollution, who the fuck do these people think they are, excuse me? Just because you believe in something believe, thus not facts doesn't give you the right to do whatever the fuck you want.

Anti-social crazies with their dated practices. The arguments NOT to stop this primitive practice are some of the dumbest reasonings I have ever read, to be expected of course from people who have the brains of proper sheep. The annoying church bells in my village brought me here! I thought, who even goes to church here? These churches were designed to control and distract the people of these small villages all over the UK!

Think about all the witch hunts all those innocent people slaughtered by the hands of these churches! I think anyone who defends that must be absolutely brainwashed.

This should be a non-issue. This whole thing should have been settled when telling the council as it is something that does not need to happen. Religious people are not entitled to any more than what non-religious people are entitled to, and we don't ring bells during early hours of the morning for no good reason.

The country has been updated since the s and people need peace from time to time. Like the comment said above me: "Think about all the witch hunts all those innocent people slaughtered by the hands of these churches! Could I just say, this thread has been up since , and not a shred of evidence supporting that the majority of people don't have a say in what goes on in the country.. Please note that updates are not sent to the council.

The council said the noise was not a "statutory nuisance" bearing in mind the age of the church, time of day and "acceptance in the local community" I would challenge all three of these answers but have no means to appeal. Join the team and maybe you'll raise the standard. FixMyStreet - feel free to delete the conversation chains on here including my own replies.

NB This incident was linked to in the Newsletter. Are we not supposed to read it? Do I have a right to request a 9am ringing?? Well said Alex. Ear plugs? First world problems strike at the heart of life. This should be considered against the desire of the handful of church-goers to loudly advertise their Sunday service' I am a devout Catholic, and we do not just ring bells trivially.

Oh ringing down now great.. I have to be up at 4. Ringing church bells is fucked up when it's night time. The problem has not been fixed. Please do not mark this problem as fixed until it has been fixed. Nice house or get ear plugs you unbelievable person x. Such a weird thing to do at least most other religions keep the noise between daylight hours. Haha mate, the fifteen minute ones are just the beginning, you'll be drowning those out in no time, It's the marathons they do when they're practising that'll get you, I always like to imagine the vicar has gotten drunk and is just tugging on the ropes willy nilly Peace.

It is a summons into a holy building, a place to gather in reverence, a place to rest. And a place that is truly restful because it it is a place we hear of Him who provides rest, Jesus Christ Himself. This rest is lasting and is not swayed by the harried world and its constant turmoil. Rather, it is a rest ending in heaven, the place of true, eternal rest. Church bells, like every part of the church building, should convey the reason the building exists.

We are, after all, only humans, and we need tangible and aural reminders of things unseen. The bells summon us with their peals. They claim our attention and call us to enter the building where we hear the Gospel proclaimed and our sins forgiven. Even if all churches crumbled into heaps of rubble, the Gospel would still be proclaimed and God would still dwell with His people.

And this is the joy of church bells. Their pealing invites us to a building that tells us with every wall and window that it, in the end, is inconsequential. It is not a proud and pompous skyscraper making its mark on modernity. It is, rather, a structure advertising its own defeat. Like the bell tower at my church, all church structures will eventually crumble and fall, and we know it. Because, in the end, the bells call us to Christ, not to the buildings here on earth. Christ will provide an eternal structure for us in heaven.

Perhaps the fallen bell tower at my church speaks just as loudly as all tall-standing bell towers and all loud-ringing church bells. For it is a very manifestation of the same thing church bells summon the people to hear: this building will not last, this world will not last. But the Word of the Lord will endure forever, the Word that tells us that we will live with Christ forever in perfect peace and rest.

You, not the world, My face shall see. I had never heard about the siege before, maybe because the 20th century wars have received so much attention. Thank you, Linda. The idea of writing about this subject came to me in Siena, as our guide was asking the group about the bell tolling at noon and nobody knew the significance.

Church bells pealing is so compelling and too rare in America. Looking forward more than ever to visiting Hungary, Romania, and now, Serbia as well.

I am always fascinated by the sound of church bells. It is amazing to find out that such important events are commemorated even today. Too bad we have the habit to forget our past! I so agree with you. Your email address will not be published.
