Daphnia , also called "water fleas" are found in the order Cladocera and are sometimes called Cladocerans. Daphnia are crustaceans and related to lobsters, crabs and shrimp. They are invertebrates with a hard outer shell and are different from another type of "water flea" the brine shrimp Artemia.
Daphnia have a single compound eye and there are normally five or six appendages attached to the thorax. The body is compressed and enclosed in a flattened, transparent carapace. The Daphnia moves by beating its antennae which are moved by large muscles. Chronic exposure to different temperatures 10 and 20 degrees C mainly affects protein metabolism.

Abstract The water flea Daphnia are planktonic crustaceans commonly found in freshwater environment that can switch their reproduction mode from parthenogenesis to sexual reproduction to adapt to the external environment.
Introduction The water flea Daphnia are planktonic crustaceans commonly found in freshwater environments. Results Transcriptome sequencing and sequence assembly We carried out a next-generation sequencing project on a cDNA library constructed from D. Figure 1. The photograph of D. Full size image. Figure 2. Or the Blowfish Strategy. Water flea predators specialize in eating tiny prey, so grower larger or pointier makes eating physically more difficult.
Notice also that its tail spike is spikier — and also the eggs tucked inside the shell toward the back. Water fleas use tiny antennas to tune into The Predator Channel. Recent research by Linda Weiss at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany and her colleagues has pinpointed the specific neurotransmitters — dopamine, in particular, seems involved -- that that turn predator cues into juvenile hormonal cascades that trigger Daphnia extra option packages to form.
Chemicals made by different predators can thus trigger the growth of structures that best improve the chances of an unfortunate Heimlich Moment. Hanazato, Takayuki.
